The Story

Château de Coulaine is a very old family winery, passed down many generations, to the Denys de Bonnaventure today. The lands is farmed since the 15th century, with proofs that vines already existed there in 1434. The Château was built in 1470 : it was quoted by French writer Francois Rabelais in Gargantua, who uses the landscapes of Chinon a lot in his books! The Chinon appellation was created in 1937, and Château de Coulaine was the first one to claim the name for his wines. In 1994, the vineyard is certified organic : the first one in Chinon! The vineyard has actually never seen any chemical products on his lands, so the lands of the estate have been organic for more than 600 years. Etienne Denys de Bonnaventure took over his parents in 2017, and now farms the 12 hectares of the estate, continuing the search for a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity.
